Questions to Ask

There are many things to consider when choosing a care provider.  You want exceptional skills, experience and integrity of all caregivers who come into contact with you or your family.   Following are some things to consider:

  • What type of services is the agency licensed to provide?
  • Does the agency provide skilled care?
  • Does the agency provide hospice care?
  • Does the agency provide personal care or homemaker services?
  • Is the agency Medicare-certified?
  • Is the agency a Medicaid provider or CFI provider?
  • Does the agency provide private duty care?
  • Does the agency have special expertise in certain  conditions, eg. caring for patients with Alzheimers or patients who have high-tech needs, such as intravenous medications or feeding tubes?
  • Does the agency provide information explaining its services, eligibility requirements, fees and funding sources?
  • How does the agency select and train its workers? What type of background checks are completed on workers?
  • Does the agency protect its workers with written personnel policies, benefits packages, workers’ compensation insurance and malpractice insurance?
  • Will the agency develop a plan of care for the individual, with specific health improvement goals for the client and care tasks for the provider?  Will the agency share the plan of care with the client’s family and client’s physician?
  • Will a regular care provider  be assigned? Who will provide services if my care provider is unavailable?
  • How will the agency supervise services to assure the quality of care for the client?  Will these supervisors make visits? If so, how often?
  • Whom do I call if I am unhappy with the services provided?  How are complaints resolved?
  • What procedures are in place to handle an emergency?
  • Are the agency’s care providers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
  • What are the agency’s costs?
  • What are the agency’s payment options?
