A New York Times Article recently highlighted the work visiting nurses do for new and expectant first time moms living on the margin. The article showcased a Memphis, TN nurse, Beth Pletz and her clients. High infant mortality rates continue to plague the American health care system.
The Times report cites studies that have consistently shown families who receive early intervention from a home care team have healthier outcomes than those who do not. In New Hampshire 29.4% of families participate in a home visitation program. These programs have been effective in improving child development, reducing abuse, and neglect and enhancing parent’s ability to respond to their child’s needs.
