Home Care & Hospice Prepare NOW for the Coronavirus

Coronavirus, COVID-19, was first discovered in China in December 2019, but has spread rapidly around the world and in the United States, with confirmed infections and fatalities increasing by the hour, not to mention an unknown number of unreported cases. Clearly, there is much to learn about COVID-19 and dealing effectively with it will be challenging.

To assist the home care and hospice community in dealing with COVID-19 in the United States, NAHC has developed a new COVID-19 Resources webpage that will be updated frequently with news and up to date information and guidance on best practices and effective infection control.

As leaders in the home care and hospice community, you should be preparing now for altered and crisis standards of care. A review of your pandemic plan should be occurring right now and processes should be updated. The home care and hospice care practice is dependent on personnel, so up to date information and training is essential. Until we learn more about how easily the COVID-19 spreads between people, healthcare providers may wear special personal protective equipment (e.g. masks and eye protection) when evaluating a patient if there is concern for infection with the COVID-19.

CMS has issued guidance for Home Health Agencies in regard to COVID-19.
